The University of Toronto's Varsity Stadium has been named ASBA 2019 Distinguished Outdoor Track Facility.
The award, highlighting construction excellence, was presented to Carpell Surfaces by the American Sports Builders Association during the annual awards ceremony held in Orlando, Florida. Project participants: Mondo USA; Sportsfield Specialities, Inc; MAPEI Corp..
The ASBA regroups builders and suppliers of materials for athletic facilities and presents awards each year to facilities built by members, that best exemplify construction excellence.
In the spring of 2018, Carpell Surfaces installed a Mondo Super X 720 running track at the University of Toronto's Varsity Stadium. The project was to be completed by August for the NACAC 2018 Track and Field Championships. More than six hundred athletes from thirty-one countries and six nations across North America, Central America, and the Caribbean participated in the competitions.
Carpell was responsible for removing the old track, base preparation, the overall design and installation of a new 400-meter, 8-lane athletics track, take-off boards, and covers (sandpit, pole vault, and steeplechase). Specific requirements included mandatory IAAF Class 2 certification to host the NACAC championships. The track is also one of the first in the western hemisphere to implement the new, longer IAAF transfer lanes: beige for the transfer lanes with light blue and dark blue for alternating lanes.
In keeping with the University’s environmental policies and design criteria, Mondo's Super X 720 prefabricated surface (certified GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD GOLD) was a “green” choice. Calendered for uniformity and consistency, it is engineered for superior speed and comfort and ensures excellent athletic performance.
Carpell has more than 1,800 installations to its credit, including 140 sports fields and athletics tracks, of which 40 projects are either FIFA or IAAF certified, the highest total of certifications in Canada.
Two of Carpell's projects were winners at the 2016 American Sports Builders Association Awards: Outstanding Outdoor Track Facility Award for Gerard Filion Secondary School as well as Distinguished Sports Facility for Gerard Filion Secondary School and York Lions Stadium, Toronto. read more
